Two miles of south-facing sand, warm water by British standards, and the calmest building conditions on the coast.
The place
Carrowen faces almost due south, which is unusual on this stretch and explains most of what the bay is like. The prevailing weather passes behind it. The sand warms early. The water in the shallows at the eastern end is measurably warmer than anywhere else we work, and the bay is swimmable from May.
The village behind the dunes has grown slowly and has resisted the obvious temptations. There is a bakery, a chandlery that also sells groceries, a sailing club that has been in the same building since 1954, and no development along the beach itself — the dune line is protected and will stay that way.
For families, Carrowen is the straightforward answer on this coast. The bay is safe, the walk to the village is flat, and the houses can be left closed for a month in winter without anything happening to them.
