The residence
The Salt Rooms sits behind the first line of marram at the quiet western end of Carrowen, with the sand at the level of its terrace and no road between the two. It is the only house on the bay with that relationship to the beach, and it exists because the plot was already built on in 1968 — nothing new would be permitted there now.
The house is one room deep across its whole width, so every room faces the water and the whole plan is cross-ventilated. That is a deliberately inefficient way to build and the reason the house feels the way it does in August.
It is offered seasonally rather than for sale. The owners use it in spring and at Christmas; the rest of the year it is let by the week through Velora, with the same housekeeping and the same linen the family uses.
