The place
The Alderleigh runs down to the estuary through sessile oak that has never been cleared. It is four miles from the open coast and feels considerably further: no salt on the windows, no wind to speak of, and a soft, filtered light that photographers on the coast come inland to find.
The valley was farmed in small holdings until the 1960s, which left a pattern of stone barns, walled yards and narrow lanes that is now protected. Almost everything Velora has built here is a conversion or a replacement on an existing footprint. Nothing new is permitted on open ground, and we would not want it to be.
