The residence
The barn was derelict when we bought it and had been open to the weather for thirty years. The stone was sound, the roof was not, and the temptation — resisted — was to divide the volume into rooms.
Instead the barn stays as one space, thirty-one metres long and open to the trusses, with the bedrooms and bathrooms contained in a freestanding oak structure that stops well short of the walls and the roof. You can walk all the way around the accommodation without leaving the barn.
Three hectares of paddock and woodland come with it, along with a walled yard, a cart shed, and the obligation — written into the title — to keep the hedgerows laid in the traditional pattern.
