The residence
Penhallow Dune House is the furthest building on the peninsula and the last address on the coast road. Beyond it there is marram, sand, and a mile of dune spine before the point itself.
Dune is a difficult ground to build on and an unforgiving one to build badly on. The house sits on piles driven eleven metres below the mobile sand, and its roof is kept below the crest of the dune behind it, which is why you cannot see it from a boat. The planting is entirely marram, sea holly and burnet rose — species that hold the dune rather than decorate it.
Inside, the plan is a single long spine with rooms opening off it to north and south, so the light changes completely from one side to the other over the course of a day.
