A bonded warehouse apartment above the working harbour
The residence
Number Nine occupies the top two floors of a bonded warehouse that held wine and spirits in transit until 1974. The walls are twenty inches of granite, the columns are cast iron, and the original cargo openings have been enlarged by exactly one course of stone — reversibly, and with the consent of the conservation officer, who watched.
The apartment is arranged with the living space at the top, under the restored king-post roof, and the bedrooms below where the walls are thickest and the harbour is quietest. It is the only residence Velora represents where the ice plant is audible in summer, which regular buyers of this coast consider a feature.
Everything is within walking distance: the fish market, the school, the surgery, and the boat.
